The Ask: Design an awareness camera for mounting in a variety of locations and that maintains the Lyric DLS
Team Composition: ID Phase – Senior ID, Design Manager, Design Director. Interaction Phase – Senior UX, Implementation parter (Mutual Mobile)
My Roles: Lead Industrial Designer, Lead Interaction Designer, Creative Director
Phases: Industrial design, DFM and manufacturing support, creative direction of 3rd party app development
Project Length: Initial ID exploration, 2 months. DFM and manufacturing support, 6 months. Direction of 3rd party app vendor, 4 months.
Challenges: Enabling the variety of mounting positions and articulation goals while maintaining the clean aesthetic of the Lyric DLS.
Learnings: I learned how to ask better questions through this project. It was my first project at Honeywell and the ID was already behind schedule. What I didn’t know is that it really didn’t matter. The ID was completed and tooled on a ridiculously tight timeline and there was no app to support it. Had I known, I would have pushed for a longer timeline to do research and create a more interesting value proposition. I am incredibly happy with the final ID, but it’s still just another IP camera.
